Hopefully this link will give you enough information on what is required by the students and what criteria we use to evaluate academic work for work experience. If you would like more information, I would be more than happy to forward it to you.

Interesting federally funded criminal justice/college credit project done at Excelsior College (formerly Regents College). They completed a site visit and made recommendations for credits for Washington State Patrol training.

Here’s a pretty good policies piece from the Colorado Community College System:

(Pam LeMay, Director of Special Academic Programs and PLA at Edmonds Community College: " I thought it was interesting that the above college does not count CPL toward residency. We had that discussion at our college and determined that since the classes were 'ours,' the learning outcomes were 'ours' and the evaluation/assessment was done by 'our' faculty, the credits earned would count toward residency. Ours is a course equivalency process through course challenges rather than a portfolio.")

Highline Community College PLA
About a year ago instructional leadership formed a committee to formalize our PLA process. We now have our first students going through the process. We are making adjustments as we go, but here is our most current flowchart. Student PLA flow.pdf. The track on the left operates much like a course challenge process. The students recieves a letter grade for these classes. Faculty have liberty in how they assess to what degree that the student met the outcomes ( ie. portofolio, exam, interview, etc). The course on the right is for people who come in with a certificate that faculty have pre-evaluated and have determined which classes the students can recieve credit for, graded as credit or pass.

Whatcom Community College Credit for Prior Learning
The faculty reviewed and revised (2007-2010) Whatcom’s acceptance of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate credits. General information is posted online, it the college catalog and materials are made available to students in the Entry and Advising office. Since 2003 Whatcom has granted 745 credits in 268 classes for prior learning. A range of 21% to 41% of the credits fell in to the direct transfer areas of Associate in Arts and Sciences degree, with the remaining credits designated for unlisted or professional-technical requirements. Several prior learning exams were utilized by students to complete prerequisites for our online Nursing and Physical Therapist Assistant degree programs. We currently evaluate a more efficient means of offering specific exams, e.g. MA101, in an online format for pre-program students.
